CHAPTER SEVEN
It was agreed that Linda would take a few days off while she recuperated and made an appointment to get her memory problems figured out. She wasnât happy about the latter, but Anna held firm. She and Linda were staying at a nearby hotel, since Lindaâs apartment was still a crime scene.
Ellie knew that Linda did a lot around the pizzeria, and she couldnât put the responsibility for covering for her onto the employees at such short notice, especially not now, with the assistant manager dealing with the aftermath of a home invasion. With some reluctance, she volunteered to open the restaurant the next morning. Normally, she loved her job and she wouldnât have minded working at the Florida pizzeria for a few days, but she wanted to spend time with her family. She rarely got to see Nonna, and it wasnât much of a visit if she spent the whole time working. Thankfully, Russell would be there to take Nonna out shopping and see the sights with her while Ellie was busy.
It felt strange to arrive at the pizzeria the next morning and begin the opening routine. The restaurant had been designed to be as similar to the original Papa Pacelliâs as possible, so everything was familiar while also being strangely different. Still, they followed all of the procedures she had developed over the years, and it was easy enough to figure out where everything was. Once the employee who was working the morning shift with her arrived, a young man named Landon, things went more quickly, and soon she was serving hot pizzas to hungry locals and tourists, moving at a pace that would have been almost unheard of in Kittiport.
A few hours into the afternoon, Kendra arrived, and she chatted happily with Ellie as they worked. She seemed more comfortable around her than Landon did, which Ellie chalked up to the other interactions theyâd had. If the other employees found her intimidating, she felt bad, but there wasnât much she could do about it. In a way, she could understand it. After all, she was the restaurantâs owner, and none of them had ever met her before.
Ellie was serving pizzas while Landon put them together and Kendra manned the register, and she swung by during a rare lull to talk with her employee. âWere you able to replace most of what was stolen?â She had been wondering how Kendra was doing after the break-in all day, but hadnât had much time to ask until now.
âYeah, pretty much all of it!â Kendra replied with a smile. âThe worst thing was that whoever broke in took my laptop, which had all of my stuff for my college classes on it, but it was all backed up to the cloud, so it wasnât that hard to recover my files. I canât even imagine what I would have done if I hadnât had my stuff backed up.â
âSounds like you were lucky,â Ellie said, giving the younger woman a small smile of her own.
